“Osaka Tonteki” at Osaka Ekimae 2nd Building
Today I enjoyed lunch at Osaka Ekimae 2nd Building at a shop specializing in pork steaks called “Osaka Tonteki”. This is one I’ve always wanted to visit, because it’s a very popular restaurant that serves “Tonteki,” or pork steak, and staple of gourmet cuisine from the Mie Prefecture.
Since this was my first time visiting, I decided to play it safe and ordered the “Tonteki Combo” (800 yen).
Normally you have the option of ordering with garlic or without, so I decided to skip on it for now.
Once I placed my order, the waiter grilled it up for me on an iron plate. The normal cut of Tonteki is a whopping 200g, so you definitely get your money’s worth!
Now let’s put that knife and fork to work and try a bite…
The meat wasn’t quite what I’d call tender, but that’s to be expected with a cut of pork this thick. But the more I chewed, the more juice was released into my mouth, creating an absolutely sublime flavor!
The slight acidity of the sauce was delightfully refreshing, and balanced splendidly with the rice for a very nice flavor.
The “Tonteki Combo” comes with a healthy serving of rice which comes with as many refills as you’d like and miso soup for a mere 800 yen. You’ll walk away with your belly swelled up like a drum, so it’s very much worth the cost!
Now, I say this is a shop specializing in Tonteki, but I saw quite a lot of people ordering Tonburger which is basically hamburger made with pork meat instead. Maybe I’ll get that next time…
The restaurant is somewhat on the smaller side, with the counter seating nine people and one table that seats four, but it’s very popular all the same with people filing in and out constantly, and quite a line stretching outside.
If you’re in the mood for pork, there’s definitely no better restaurant than this!
